Welcome to Lewtrenchard WI
We are a friendly & welcoming WI in rural Devon, established in 1927. Our first president was Mrs Marion Baring-Gould, a very important family in this area. A meeting was held at the Theatre in Lew Trenchard on 20th October 1927 where it was decided to start a Women’s Institute.
Many of our members have a farming background but we have recently gained quite a number of younger members from all walks of life. We have an average of 30 members and proud to say that we didn’t lose any members during Covid where we met on Zoom. We had speakers, crafts & a Christmas party – all on Zoom. Members not online where always included, we started a newsletter, visited them (socially distanced of course), kept in touch by phone calls and brought them small gifts at Christmas & Easter. We also set up a group of volunteers to help those unable to shop or collect prescriptions. Happy to say that we are now back to normal meetings which are on the second Monday of the month at 7pm GMT or 7.30pm BST.
We meet at Victory Hall in Lewdown (EX20 4DP) (///joys.maps.repeated). Our program is varied with loads of interesting speakers, cooking demos, hands on crafts, quizzes & an outing in June.
We take part in many activities organised by Devon Federation, such as Skittles tournament, Quiz competition, Beauty Days & many more as well as our own walks on the 4th Monday of the month & a coffee morning at Roadford Lake on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Both events are very well attended and everyone is welcome.
Just come along and one of our members will ‘buddy up’ with you. The first 3 visits are free of charge, this should give you a good flavour of what we are up to. See you soon!
As of January 2019 there were approximately 220,000 members of 6,300 Women's Institutes in England, Wales and the islands.
